The Early History of Keystone, Colorado

The Snake River, which runs through Keystone CO real estate, was the main source of gold for the prospectors.  Once panning for gold was no longer beneficial, they also expanded to dredging nearby lakes and mining the mountains.  The area is recognized for the discovery of gold. Not only gold was found in the mines, but silver was found and mined as well. Towns around the area and became boom towns.During the the mid-1800s, gold was discovered in the nearby Breckenridge and prospectors from all over the world flooded into the area to find their fortunes.  A group of prospectors from the state of Pennsylvania settled into the Utah Territory area of what is nowKeystone.  In homage to their home state of Pennsylvania, which was also called the Keystone state, the prospectors dubbed the are “Keystone” and it remains that today.
The mines flourished in Keystone and the surrounding area for many years, but as the population dwindled in the mid-1900s, many of the small towns, including Keystone, were in danger of becoming ghost towns. While Keystone has little history between the boom town it became in the mining area and the opening of Keystone resort in 1970, it somehow survived and is once again thriving. In 1882, the South Park and Pacific Railroad Company came to the area, providing transportation in and out of the mountains as long as the snow did not get too high. Often times residents had to make tunnels in the deep snow in order to get from place to place in the town.

Today Keystone, along with the rest of Summit County (which includes the towns of Silverthorne, Dillon, Frisco and Breckenridge), is known as part of Colorado’s Largest Playground. The Summit County area surrounds beautiful Lake Dillon and offers four ski areas (Keystone, Breckenridge, Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain), miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, and year-round activities and events.
