Grand, County Colorado – Gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park

When Grand County was created February 2, 1874 it was carved out of Summit County and contained land to the western and northern borders of the state, which is now in present day Moffat County and Routt County. It was named after Grand Lake and the Grand River, an old name for the upper Colorado River, which has its headwaters in the county. On January 29, 1877 Routt County was created and Grand County shrunk down to its current western boundary.

The Town of Kremmling, Colorado lies at the confluence of Muddy Creek, Blue and Colorado Rivers in Grand County, about 100 miles west of Denver and in the heart of Grand County. At an elevation of 7,364 feet, Kremmling is located at the junction of Colorado Highway 9 and US Highway 40.

In 1884, Rudolph Kremmling established a general store in the town, and as ranchers occupied the surrounding areas, more services were established in Kremmling to meet their needs. The town incorporated in 1904. A friendly, small-town atmosphere has influenced many families and businesses to settle in Kremmling-a town where it’s easy to be involved if that’s what you want and just as easy to “get away from it all” in the thousands of acres of Bureau of Land management and U.S. Forest Service land surrounding Kremmling.  Just a two hour drive from Denver, Kremmling has easy access to every need.

Just south of Kremmling lies the Green Mountain Reservoir.  The reservoir was built to replace water to the Colorado River that gets sent to the Front Range through the Big Thompson Project. It is a storage reservoir so the levels will flucuate as water is called for on the Western Slope.  Green Mountain Reservoir serves as a recreational hub for the area. Numerous campgrounds, boat ramps and recreational facilities surround the lake.  Rumor has it that the best trout fishing is at the inlet, from Prairie Point south to the river.

Just to the east of Kremmling, you pass through Hot Sulphur Springs (yes, it is still open so feel free to stop by for a soak!) past Granby and Grand Lake and leads to Trail Ridge Road, a scenic road cresting over 12,000 feet through Rocky Mountain National Park.  Rocky Mountain National Park’s encompasses over 400 square miles, boasting spectacular mountain views, over 300 miles of hiking trails and plenty of opportunity to enjoy Colorado wildlife in their native environments.
