Beaver Creek boasts the ambiance of a modern resort coupled with the unhurried feel of an alpine village, where visitors the world over enter the gates and leave everyday life behind all year long. World-class skiing and resort amenities, golf and drop-dead gorgeous Rocky Mountain views make this town in the Vail Valley the ideal place for a serene vacation or permanent vacation home.
Beaver Creek is home to one of Colorado’s most popular ski resorts. Beaver Creek was originally conceived by Erik Martin, Forest Service Program Manager for Ski Area Administration, to be a small portion of a larger ski area connected on the east by ski lifts and trails to the Town of Minturn via Meadow Mountain and Grouse Mountain, as well as, Battle Mountain, and Vail ski resort, and on the west to a new entrance portal in Lake Creek. Grouse Mountain was rated excellent for skiing and comparable to Snowmass-at-Aspen by the Forest Service. Skiing connections to Minturn, Battle Mountain, and Vail ski resort were stalled in 1976 due to public opposition.
When Colorado sought to host the 1976 Winter Olympics, Beaver Creek development was a key part of its successful bid. The prestigious alpine downhill race, the showcase event of the Winter Olympics, was planned for Beaver Creek by the Denver Olympic Organizing Committee. Unfortunately, after state voters handily passed a referendum in 1972 to stop state funding for the Olympics, the 1976 games were re-assigned to Innsbruck, Austria. The closest Beaver Creek has come is the co-hosting of the World Championships, which they did in 1999 and will again co-host with Vail for 2015.
The Beaver Creek Resort opened in 1980 with 425 acres of skiable terrain, 4 chairlifts and 28 runs. Today, Beaver Creek boasts 300 days of sunshine, 1,832 total skiable acres, 150 trails and 25 lifts, including 11 high speed quad chairlifts. It is operated through Vail Resorts and is a true luxury ski resort located just west of Vail and near the town of Avon, Colorado. The mountain is known for its world-class restaurants, high end real estate and lodging, abundant shopping and quiet, family-friendly atmosphere. Beaver Creek spans three villages: Beaver Creek Village, Bachelor Gulch and Arrowhead Village. In the main Beaver Creek Village, skiers and visitors alike will find shops, art galleries, bars and restaurants connected by heated walkways and escalators.
A fan favorite, free fresh baked cookies scent the air every afternoon, tempting tired skiers and riders toward the base to call it a day, an activity you will NOT want to miss.
LOCAL TRIVIA: The late U.S. President Gerald Ford (and wife Betty) owned a home in Beaver Creek. Adventurist Steve Fossett also lived here, and actor Kelsey Grammer (and his ex-wife Camille) had a house in Beaver Creek, just to name a few of Beaver Creek’s most famous residents.
